Alaskan Malamutes
Alaskan Malamutes are wonderful dogs. First bred to help people in the Arctic transport goods and themselves across the frozen plains, they continue to amaze many today in multiple areas: conformation, agility, weight pull, sledding, skijoring, obedience, rally, and relaxing on the sofa! Although Malamutes can make wonderful family pets, they are not for everyone. Many of them have a high prey drive, and most do not understand how big they actually are. (The Standard calls for males to be 25" at the shoulder and weigh about 85 lbs.; females are to be 23" at the shoulder and weigh about 75 lbs. However, size is only to be considered if all other things are equal; for this reason, it is not unusual to see dogs as small as 55 lbs. or as large as 100 lbs.!) For this reason, families with small animals and/or children are to exercise caution when looking to add a Malamute to the family.
For a very long time, we bred Kotzebue Alaskan Malamutes. The Kotzebue dogs were the first dogs recognized by AKC as Alaskan Malamutes. I can give you a whole history lesson about these dogs, but you might prefer to call me for that information :) While we do have some frozen semen left on a few pure Kotzebue dogs, when we lost Till's Kotzebue Hot Coals, it was the end of the line around the world.
Thank you to my fellow breeders for getting me "back" into Malamutes a few years ago. We are looking forward to some upcoming litters, and we have a couple of young stars who will begin their AKC show careers once Covid is done!
